Copenhagen invests in continued cruise success

Copenhagen is cementing its position as Northern Europe's leading cruise destination with a dedicated cruise passenger terminal in Copenhagen Airport and an investment of30m in new quay facilities in Copenhagen Port. Also part of a major investment programme to improve facilities and increase the number of turnarounds in the Danish capital are new recreational offers for off-duty crew members. Meanwhile, Copenhagen will once again this year set a new record for the number of dockings.

When the season's first cruise ship arrives in Copenhagen on April 26 its passengers and crew will discover a whole range of new possibilities. Copenhagen Airport will open a dedicated check-in terminal exclusively for cruise passengers which will allow them to check in their baggage early, giving them extra hours for sightseeing or shopping before boarding their flight. The terminal, named Hanger 145, now has 16 check-in desks and will be operational from this spring on days when there are most cruise passengers.

- It should be a good experience to end your cruise and fly out of Copenhagen. That is why Copenhagen Airport and Cruise Copenhagen Network (CCN) found a solution to make it quicker, easier and more comfortable to be a disembarking passenger. Making it possible for passengers to check their bags in earlier gives them a greater freedom and flexibility, says director of passengers, Susanne Frank, Copenhagen Airport.

The work to attract cruise companies and tourists to Copenhagen is being carried out by CCN. It is also important for CCN that crew have a good stay in Copenhagen which is why this year they are launching a leisure programme aimed at crew with, among other things, a range of free offers including the chance to take part in sports and exercise; go sightseeing; and shop with discounts in selected stores. The Crew Programme is sponsored by CCN, the Port of Copenhagen and other CCN members.

Senior director of sales and marketing, Ole Andersen, Wonderful Copenhagen CVB, comments:
- It is important for Copenhagen that crew are good ambassadors for the city. Crews have more hours at their disposal during turnarounds which we hope they can use, for example, to play basketball, visit the city's sights or shop. During a season crews return here several times, which is why it is important that they are glad to come here.

The long term strategy for harbour investment
In 2009 Copenhagen Port will open its new quay area for cruise ships. The quay will primarily be for turnarounds and is intended to ensure Copenhagen's continuing success as a cruise port. The investment will total upwards of €30m.

- The investment in new moorings is one part of a long term strategy which will ensure that Copenhagen continues to be the natural choice for cruise companies when they are deciding on their turnaround ports. Good facilities play a leading role when cruise lines and passengers choose a destination. That's why it is important that we continue to improve, says Per Schmidt of Copenhagen Malmö Port and Chairman of CCN.

Once again this year Copenhagen will set a new record in terms of the number of passengers, dockings and turnarounds. 290 cruise ships have given notification of their arrival, of which three ships are Christmas cruises. This year Copenhagen expects to welcome 420,000 cruise passengers, five per cent more than last year. Turnarounds constitute 41 per cent of all dockings, 15 per cent more than last year.
