The Little Mermaid is off to China... - and to Tivoli too
One of the most famous tourist attractions in Denmark, The Little Mermaid, is heading off to Shanghai from April to November 2010. But tourists looking for her in Copenhagen will not go home empty-handed. Firstly, from late April, contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei will be filling the gap she leaves with a new display.
She has been there for 97 years, carefully sitting on a stone and wistfully looking for her prince - the world-famous Little Mermaid. She sits in the harbour at Langelinie in Copenhagen, and is a national landmark synonymous with the city. But from April to November she will be in Shanghai at the EXPO 2010 exhibition. But while she is away, her spot at Langelinie will not be empty. The contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei will be filling the gap with a new display as part of Danish-Chinese art exchange. Ai Weiwei is best known for his spectacular decoration of the Olympic stadium in Beijing known as ‘The Bird's Nest'.
See an original copy in Tivoli
Even though The Little Mermaid is going all the way to EXPO in China, tourists won't have to go to China to see what the Mermaid is all about.
While she is in China, a copy of the original statue will be able to be seen in the Tivoli Gardens. The copy has been loaned by the descendants of Edvard Eriksen, the sculptor of The Little Mermaid. The copy can be found in Tivoli from 15 April until 24 October 2010.

Queen Mary II visits Elsinore
On 11 May, one of the world's biggest cruise liners will arrive at Elsinore.
From the pier, the 3000 passengers on the Queen Mary II will have a fantastic view of the legendary Kronborg Castle, famous from Shakespeare's ‘Hamlet'.
The harbour at Elsinore is undergoing a few years of major improvement work, and by 2012 it will be one of the most exciting in northern Europe.
By then, Elsinore's new cultural centre, the Culture Yard, as well as an amazing underground Maritime Museum will both have been inaugurated right next to the pier and Kronborg Castle. Elsinore is also the gateway to both the area north of Copenhagen and Northern Zealand, which are steeped in history with castles and museums all within a short distance of each other. The passengers on the Queen Mary II can experience the Taste of Elsinore tour, which combines the traditional guided tour around Elsinore with the chance to sample some of the culinary delicacies in the town's shops.

The National Museum of Denmark's permanent exhibition Danish Prehistory has reopened in a new, modern design - an absolute must-see with free admission.
Highlights such as the Vikings' gold and silver hoards, the 3,400-year-old unique Sun Chariot and the contemporary Egtved Girl with her knee-length cord skirt have been given pride of place. So even if you only have time for a flying visit, you can get a fine overall impression of Danish prehistory from the first Ice Age hunters to the Vikings.
The highly respected Danish architectural firm schmidt hammer lassen has designed the exhibition. In Danish Prehistory, light and daylight have been used to create different moods from room to room. Some of the rooms have a special ‘stage design', so that the sensory experiences vary throughout the exhibition.

Timeless design hotel turns 50
The world's first-ever design hotel, and home of the famous "Egg" and "Swan" chairs, celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer.
On 1 July 1960, the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, as it is now known, welcomed the first guests to its 275 rooms and suites, all of which had been designed with careful consderation by the world-famous Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen.
Even if you cannot quite afford a stay in a five-star hotel when you are in Copenhagen, you can still sit under a Royal lamp, or open a door with an original Jacobsen door handle by taking a peek inside and making use of some of the design hotel's other facilities.
On the 20th floor you can find the Alberto K gourmet restaurant which offers modern Italian cuisine you of course eat with cutlery designed by Arne Jacobsen.
In fact, the design of the cutlery is so futuristic that Stanley Kubrick used it in his film "2001- A Space Odyssey". Elsewhere in the hotel it is possible to have a look inside a room which has been maintained exactly as it was in 1960. In room 606, all the pieces of furniture are now world-famous classics.

Cool ice art in a cool place
ICEBAR Copenhagen by ICEHOTEL has launched a new concept: Northernmost Attitude.
The bar has renewed itself once again and now welcomes guests with new ice art by
Åke Larsson and Sofi Ruotsalainen. An ice raven in a cage hangs over the bar watching you as you place your order, while opposite the bar, admiring the full scale Harley Davidson sculpted from pure ice is of course mandatory. Open boxes in the wall contain miniature ice models, in one; a pair of ice skates, in another a biker driving a reindeer. At this bar everything - even the glass for your drink - is made of ice - so bring your gloves.
ICEBAR Copenhagen by ICEHOTEL is a part of the 200-room Choice Hotel 27 which is located in the centre of Copenhagen right next to City Hall Square.

Copenhagen cocktail - The taste of Copenhagen
Two years ago, a group of friends and colleagues wondered why there isn't a cocktail called Copenhagen, and their Friday night discussion led to them starting a project to create one.
Five of Copenhagen's best bartenders were invited to compete to create the taste of Copenhagen - served in a cocktail glass. A few basic rules were set: the cocktail had to have a Scandinavian taste, be inspired by Danish design, combine the modern and trendy with the historical and traditional, include Cherry Heering Liqueur - the only spirit made in Copenhagen - and be easily made worldwide. The contest was won by Gromit Eduardsen from the Copenhagen cocktailbar 1105 in the heart of Copenhagen. Here's the winning recipe, which of course must be tasted when you're in Copenhagen!
Copenhagen cocktail recipe:
5 cl. Bols Genever
2 cl. Cherry Heering Liqueur
2 cl. freshly squeezed lime juice
2 cl. sugar syrup (Monin)
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Shake with ice cubes and strain into a glass without ice.
Peel a slice of an organic orange and place it on top, so that the aroma of the orange floats on top of the cocktail.
