SAS has focused and will continue to maintain focus on the environment and to find solutions that reduce negative impact on the climate. It is a fact that aviation affects the climate. We neither can nor want to deny this fact, even though aviation is only responsible for 2-3 percent of global CO2 emission.
SAS is Official Airline and Greening Partner of several conferences in Copenhagen. All the participants who choose to fly with SAS will be compensated for the CO2 emission. In cooperation with the International Air Transport Association IATA, SAS hosted an Aviation Session at the World Business Summit May 24-26 in Copenhagen, where top leaders from our industry agreed on a number of targets and recommendations to the politicians.
We urge the decision makers to improve and simplify air traffic conditions and stimulate investments in new technology and sustainable fuel. It is important that climate rules and regulations are applied globally so that the whole airline industry benefits from these efforts.
SAS' principal target is to reduce CO2 emission by 20 percent in 2020 at the latest. In the long term the aim is to make flying possible without emissions. SAS as well as other airlines are working on a sustainable future of flying.
In the meantime, SAS has chosen to play a major role and has taken a number of initiatives e.g.:
Green Approaches
In a well-prepared approach, engines can be set in idle mode. The aircraft will practically glide down and save fuel and CO2 emission.
Fuel Save Program
More than 50 activities have been initiated in order to reduce fuel consumption by 6-7 percent by 2011.
Effective Routes
Better planning and intensified cooperation with air traffic management lead to fuel-saving in all flying modes.
Alternative Fuel
SAS supports developing of biofuel. SAS aims to be amongst the first airlines to use sustainable alternative fuel.
ISO 14001
SAS aims to achieve a certification according to environmental management standards by 2010 (EMAS and ISO 14001).
Greening Partner
At the Nordic Climate Solution, taking place Sep. 8 - 9 in Copenhagen, SAS contributes as Greening Partner, gives a speech and holds a workshop focusing on biofuel for the aviation industry. Similarly, the purpose of these activities is to impact the development and to deliver recommendations and suggestions to COP15.
