DR Concert Hall

The DR Concert Hall is an architectural gem. Whether one likes the Functionalist style or not, the Concert Hall is such a perfect work in the genre that it is an architectural experience to go there.

Architecture
The architect Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the beautiful concert hall, which was used for the first time on 11th September 1945. Lauritzen also designed all the furnishings, and the materials were selected very deliberately - with loving attention to the details. The interior of the hall was something of a sensation when it was built, since it broke with earlier traditions for concert halls. Its unconventional trapezoid shape, for example, was chosen for acoustic reasons, and since it was primarily furnished with a view to radio broadcasts, the spaces for the orchestra and choir were given higher priority than the space for the audience. The undulating ceiling walls are everywhere clad in light woods, and like a giant decoration on the wall behind the orchestra one sees the organ, which was built by the firm of Marcussen & Søn and was completed in 1946, around the same time as the building was finished.

Music performed
The Danish national Symphony Orchestra/DR is presented here almost every Thursday in the season from September to May, and the Danish Radio Sinfonietta occasionally gives concerts there, as do the Danish National Choir/DR and the Danish Radio Girls' Choir; but the hall is also used for guest performances and for holding competitions. The biggest of these is the conductors’ competition called after one of the great conductors of the DNSO, Malko; but there is also a chamber music competition where young Danish musicians can get a hearing.

Seating
The Concert Hall has seating for 1074, spread over stalls, balcony and gallery. The public are admitted an hour before the concert begins, normally at 7 p.m. In the foyer there is a free cloakroom and drinks and refreshments are sold from the bar before the concert and in the interval.
