To control the city's growing traffic, you have to pay for parking in the city centre and in the "Indre Brokvarterer" (see below). The rules and parking-zone-system can be difficult to understand, so here is a brief summery:
Three different parking zones
The city centre and the inner bridge areas "Indre Brokvarterer" which cover Østerbro, Vesterbro, Nørrebro, Amagerbro and Islands Brygge are divided into a red, a green and a blue parking pay-zone. The closer you get to the city centre, the more expensive it gets.
Prices
Each parking pay-zone has its own tariff. Tickets are purchased from the ticket-dispensing machines placed around the parking areas (payable coins are 1 DKK, 2 DKK, 5 DKK, 10 DKK and 20 DKK) credit cards accepted as well.
The bottom part of the ticket contains information about where you have parked and the validity of the ticket and can be torn off. The rest of the ticket must be placed in the front window, preferably at the side nearest to the sidewalk.

Carparks
Signs at the major roads leading into the city display the number of free parking spaces in the major multi-storey carparks (see example here).
