Children are welcome in most Copenhagen cafés and restaurants, but some of them offer a little extra for families with children. Here is a selection - all located in downtown Copenhagen:

Barn spiser i sin barnevognSult at Cinemateket

At the Danish Filminstitute, Cinemateket, across from Kongens Have (the King's Garden) there is a large café called Sult. The café opens at noon on weekdays and offers a special burger or fried chicken for the kids. While you are there, you should check the repertoire of children's films in the children's cinema, where special films for the three - nine-year-olds are shown. Sult also offers a popular weekend brunch buffet 11:00 - 15:00.

Café Hovedtelegrafen

Close to Illum on Købmagergade is Café Hovedtelegrafen, which can be recommended for a lunch break during your shopping spree. A lift brings you to the top floor of the Postal Museum and the café offers a fine view over the city's rooftops, plenty of space for baby prams and a menu with good Danish food. During the summer months, toddlers can have a nap in their prams on the outdoor terrace, and you are always welcome to ask for the toys of which Café Hovedtelegraphen has no less than three crates full!

Café på 4.

On the top floor of the Illum department store near Amagertorv, you will find another café with a fine view and a place where kids are welcome. Take the lift near the entrance in Købmagergade - an experience in itself - it has glass walls and is situated on the outside of the building, quite a thrill. There is plenty of space in the café, and there is a children's corner with toys to play with. The café menu includes kids' burgers, ice cream and chicken filets, all favourite dishes where youngsters are concerned.

La Rocca

At the Italian restaurant La Rocca, children are always welcome. La Rocca has a special children's room with TV and video, lots of toys, kid-sized furniture and a special children's menu. The kids are entertained, while mum and dad enjoy their meal and each other. During the summer, there is a very nice courtyard, which is open May - September. Remember the famous scene in Disney's Lady and the Tramp?

Chili - burgerRestaurant Chili

Situated very close to the City Hall Square and the National Museum is American inspired Chili, a burger restaurant. This is a popular place if you are with your kids. No table cloths on the tables to soil or mess up. There are kid-size burgers for children under 12 years old and, of course, a couple of high chairs for the youngest. Many will appreciate the fact that meals are served at your table, so you can settle down and let your food be brought to you. A very popular feature is the merry-go-round and lazy susan with all the sauces and relish, which comes with your burger.
