A quick glance at a map of Copenhagen and its surroundings will reveal many green areas.
Until around 1850 the city was surrounded by a system of ramparts and moats. When eventually the population started moving outside this confinement, the fortifications were transformed into a series of green parks and the moats into lakes.
All year round a walk in the parks of the city is a great break from the busy traffic.
