Places and buildings of historical interest

Gråbrødre TorvAll though Copenhagen is from 1167, relatively few buildings are preserved from the Middle Ages. A bad combination of fires and British bombing in 1801 and 1807 has destroyed many buildings. The area around the old University and the Cathedral was completely left in ruins.

However, this does not mean that Copenhagen is without evidence of historical architecture. Take a stroll through the streets and let the atmosphere take you centuries back in time.

We have chosen to give you a list in chronological order as most buildings can be reached by foot. The walk will cover the area which was confined within the town walls of the fortified Copenhagen from before 1850.
